Frequently asked questions
What were the most popular baby names in 2025?
For 2025, the most popular US baby name for girls was Olivia (13,544 babies) and for boys was Liam (20,818 babies), according to the Social Security Administration. The full top 10 girls were Olivia, Charlotte, Emma, Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Evelyn, Sofia, Eliana, and the top 10 boys were Liam, Noah, Oliver, Theodore, Henry, James, Elijah, Mateo, William, Lucas.
Where does this baby-name data come from?
All figures come from the U.S. Social Security Administration's Popular Baby Names dataset, which counts names on Social Security card applications. National data goes back to 1880; state data is also available. SSA only publishes names with at least 5 occurrences in a year, so very rare names are not shown. The data is U.S. public domain.
How is a name's rank decided?
Within each year and sex, names are ranked by the number of babies given that name on Social Security card applications. Rank 1 is the most common. A name can have a different rank for boys versus girls. Names with the same count share a rank.
Why isn't a name I know listed?
SSA suppresses any name with fewer than 5 occurrences in a given year to protect privacy, and we build full history pages for roughly the top 600 names plus enduring classics. A name outside that set still exists in SSA's raw files but may not have a dedicated page here.
