How America's #1 baby names changed by decade

By NameTrends editorial · 2026-06-04

In short: America's #1 baby names turn over slowly but completely. James and Linda led the 1950s, Michael and Jennifer the 1980s, and Jacob and Emily the 2000s - while today Liam and Olivia top the list. Each generation's favorites become the next generation's vintage revivals.

Naming fashion moves in slow waves. Looking at the start of each decade in SSA data tells the story of how the top of the list has completely changed - and how today’s “vintage revival” names were once the everyday default.

Three observations:

  1. Total turnover. None of the 1950 leaders (Linda, James) are #1 today, and none of today’s leaders cracked the top of the list back then.
  2. Long reigns, then exits. Michael and Jennifer dominated the 1980s for years before fading - Jennifer in particular fell off the top sharply once it peaked.
  3. The revival cycle. Many of today’s fastest-rising names (think Eloise, Clara, Theodore) are early-1900s classics coming back around, roughly a century after their first peak.
